Excellent book!! I love books that tell a story and teach about different culture mythologies。 This one definitely did not disappoint。 I also enjoyed the author's nod to Rick Riordan by mentioning the Greek gods who live in the Empire State building。 I'm from Los Angeles and I recognized the places mentioned in the book。 I enjoy books more when I know exactly where they are because I have been there (Santa Monica Pier, L。A。 Zoo, Angeles National Forest。。。)。 She talks about good food and some The Excellent book!! As one of the few people she knows who can't do magic, Riley has always felt a little out of place in her gifted community。 With encouragement from her sister, Riley decides she won't give up on her dream to become a mystical healer and sets off on a quest to obtain the rights to use magic for herself。 Nothing goes quite as planned, and a seemingly simple request of the goddess turns into a life-or-death drama that could mean the end of Riley's entire family。 I was surprised at how long it took As one of the few people she knows who can't do magic, Riley has always felt a little out of place in her gifted community。 With encouragement from her sister, Riley decides she won't give up on her dream to become a mystical healer and sets off on a quest to obtain the rights to use magic for herself。 Nothing goes quite as planned, and a seemingly simple request of the goddess turns into a life-or-death drama that could mean the end of Riley's entire family。 I was surprised at how long it took me to get into this book。 I typically really enjoy middle grade magical realism, and with the Riordan endorsement, I guess I was expecting something a bit different。 The most off-putting thing was Riley's wishy-washy personality, which wasn't enjoyable to read。 Once she started standing up for herself, I liked her a lot better。 The setting was very community-minded--Riley never leaves her hometown during the entire adventure and is constantly bumping into people who help her along--which was a bit to get used to as well, but turned out to be one of the things I liked most about the story。 I was surprised to learn of the legends of Korean deities, and I would have liked to learn a bit more, but I guess I can always do some of my own research。 Apparently there are many pantheons that I'm unfamiliar with。 Despite my misgivings, I ended up really enjoying this book。 I'm not sure if I'll read the next one, but I am satisfied with the ending。 Perhaps Graci Kim will work on developing the voice a bit more distinctly in future books。 。。。more

Ah what a great dive into Korean mythology!I love how the pressure to fit in and the familial love really drove the story。 I felt connected to Riley, and that’s something special I don’t think I’ll forget。 I like how the plot unfolded nicely, and that was definitely a perfect blend of bitter and sweet for the ending! Great representation, voice, and food, haha! Looking forward for more from the author :D

I CAN’T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH。 This is the first book starring a Korean-American main character that I’ve fully loved。 The folk tales referenced were all stories that I’d heard growing up, and world-building throughout the story was immaculate。 Korean witch sisters, enchanted boba tea, magical clans (tokki, gom, gumiho, horangi, miru, samjogo), AND a temple hidden in an Hmart- what more could you ask for?
Daphne Belderol,
Exciting! Fast paced。 Love the ending。 5 more to go。 I really thought it was the compass。 I was wrong。 Boris is unique。 Even I warmed up to Jennie。

A pretty good start for this series as the mystery about the sixth clan is pretty cool and seeing how the different clans work and seeing how the author blends Korean beliefs into the world。 The mystery does develop in pretty cool ways and does have some nice twists。

Their sleuthing reveals a promising incantation in the family's old spell book, and the sisters decide to perform it at Hattie's initiation ceremony。 If it works, no one will ever treat Riley as an outsider again。 It's a perfect plan!Until it isn't。 When the sisters attempt to violate the laws of the Godrealm, Hattie's life ends up hanging in the balance, and to save her Riley has to fulfill an impossible task: find the last fallen star。 But what even is the star, and how can she find it?As Riley embarks on her search, she finds herself meeting fantastic creatures and collaborating with her worst enemies。 And when she uncovers secrets that challenge everything she has been taught to believe, Riley must decide what it means to be a witch, what it means to be family, and what it really means to belong。This book was something I definitely did not see coming!!Like, OMGS, this book was totally worth reading, and if you haven't read it yet, GO READ IT。 NOW。So, Riley Oh is our protagonist who lives with her adopted family, who are from the Gom Clan; the healers clan。 But Riley is a saram; a non-magical person, who, isn't able to fit in and feels like an outsider most of the time。Now, y'all may be like, "Yeah, definitely! The I'm-an-outsider-who's-family-is-unknown-and-super-mysterious trope is too old, I ain't gonna read it"。 But trust me when I say, this book is definitely worth it; the folklore, the magic, the friendship and FOOD were just *chef's kiss*。This book definitely gives out a lot of PJO and Aru Shah vibes; it even has a tiny reference to one of them, if you pay attention!Graci Kim does a fantastic job of blending Korean Mythology and the modern time, all while making the plot super engaging and fun to invest on。The world-building was really cool, with the six clans and their patron goddesses and we might not get to know much of the world but it definitely had its moments。If you ask me to choose between the characters and the plot; which I liked best, I would be torn, 'cause that's how wonderful this book is!!"Because, like a coin, there are always two sides to every story。 Without the two sides, it cannot be whole。”The plot was super engaging as I said earlier and the book was fast-paced and you really can't put the book down, once you've started reading it!! The whole story isn't revealed at first, but the way things slowly unravel up until the end seemed very miraculous and satisfying。"Sometimes you gotta burn your fingers to enjoy the s’more。"The characters in this story, especially Riley and Emmett were carefully written, and truthfully, the way Riley goes from "a-very-shy-outcast" to "sassy-girl-capable-of-killing-a-goddess" is pretty cool! Meanwhile Emmett was also fun to read, being the mom-friend of the group, to feeling betrayed whe Riley kept the truth from him to accepting his mom's loss and overall not being allergic to emotions were just perfect。 The other side characters that didn't actually play an major role also had their "spotlight moments" and they totally shone through it!!The ending was bittersweet ngl, but Hey! That leaves more room for the sequel and the rest other books, I can't wait for!!Overall, I'd give a 5/5 for this piece of gem。 。。。more

This newest installment in Rick Riordan's imprint by debut author Graci Kim is a highly engaging story and is an entirely new spin on the general children-of-gods theme。 Riley Oh is an adopted Korean American girl living in LA。 Her family is a group of magical healers who are one branch of an extensive Korean community that makes their living from magic in plain sight。 Riley is non-magical, a saram, and she yearns to be a true Gom (healer) and even has all her incantations memorized。 When her sister Hattie offer to perform a super off-limits power sharing spell, Riley readily agrees but their experimentation goes wrong and reveals devastating secrets and a longtime conspiracy。 Together with her best friend Emmett and other friends along the way, Riley must race against the clock to fix her errors and help save her community from destruction。 Kim has established a wonderful magical world that is able to live in plain sight within real world; their meeting place is disguised within an H-mart, their library in a laundromat, and their school in a karaoke bar。 The branches of this Korean clan are all gifted magical abilities from their six patron goddesses and the children must perform an initiation on their 13th birthday。 There are the typical Riordan-like animated objects like a scooter that acts like a pet and doors that must be complimented which are cute。 We also have a good deal of the teenage snark though it ebbs and flows throughout the novel and reaches a very manageable level by the end。 The adventures within this magical world though very Percy Jackson-esque also reminds me a lot of Harry Potter because of the interaction with the non-magic world (lots of forgetting infusions and things hidden in plain sight)。 There was also unraveling of a prophecy tied to the end of the world which is so HP-like。 I was enthralled by this book and am gutted that I have to wait a year for the next one! It's perfect for the Percy Jackson and other Rick Riordan imprint fans as well as Potterheads, those that like Amari and the Night Brothers, and generally enjoy secret magic in the real world! 。。。more

I absolutely could not put this book down。 Riley’s fears, love for her family and her overwhelming desire to be accepted is very relatable。 While the main story follows Riley, Kim does not allow for her story arc to over shadow the secondary characters, who have their own story lines and growth woven into the main story seamlessly。 This debut is incredible! I highly recommend it and I cannot wait for the next book! 。。。more

3。5*Netgalley arc*I loved all the korean references in culture, food, and mythology。 And I loved the concept of the clans each gifted with one particular ability。 It was maybe too juvenile in parts, even for a MG book, and it was a bit too rushed towards the end。 In the last chapters everything seemed to solved itself quite easily。 After all that build-up, the revelation was thrown there without much explanation nor embellishments。The MC is an almost thirteen year old girl, and she both acts exa 3。5*Netgalley arc*I loved all the korean references in culture, food, and mythology。 And I loved the concept of the clans each gifted with one particular ability。 It was maybe too juvenile in parts, even for a MG book, and it was a bit too rushed towards the end。 In the last chapters everything seemed to solved itself quite easily。 After all that build-up, the revelation was thrown there without much explanation nor embellishments。The MC is an almost thirteen year old girl, and she both acts exactly her age and maybe a tad too matured。 At times she sounded too whiny but who isn't? And she's in a really precarious situation so I won't judge。 It just sounded sometimes a bit much。 But she was really likeable and faced all situations head high in order to save the people she loved。The story needed a bit more explanation, especially towards the ending where everything seemed to happen at once, but overall this is a solid beginning to a nice series。 The epilogue leaves you curious and wanting for more。 。。。more

The Last Fallen StarNML rating: Top Shelf (might upgrade to Super Star in future)Stars: 4。5 NetGalley eARC reviewHoly shirtballs! Graci Kim has created a wonderful universe full of adventure, love, and Korean culture。 Kim mentions not seeing herself in the books she would read when she was younger and wanting to change that。 I believe that The Last Fallen Star has accomplished her goal。 I'm a caucasian American of European descent, so I don't want to make assumptions, but my opinion is that Kim The Last Fallen StarNML rating: Top Shelf (might upgrade to Super Star in future)Stars: 4。5 NetGalley eARC reviewHoly shirtballs! Well, they decide to cast a magic sharing spell and summon a goddess。 What could possibly go wrong?I loved every moment of this story。 I read until my eyes started to close, I didn't want to put it down。 Can Seoulful Tacos be a real place please? 。。。more
